John Cabot sights the North American mainland.

June 24, 1497

A Venetian (Giovanni Caboto) sailing for England and searching for a route to India, Cabot comes ashore soon after, probably at today’s Cape Breton, Newfoundland, and claims the land he discovers for Henry VII. Prior to Cabot’s voyage, fishermen from Cabot subsequently makes a second voyage to the New World, but never returns.
